My time has been spent with grading homework and I have to figure out a better way to schedule so I get my life back! I luv teaching but not so much the grading assignments part. Especially when it takes over time that should go to the basics ... like sleeping!

I just enjoyed a nice 4-day-weekend. I really enjoyed the time off. I was able to spend an afternoon with my boyfriend ~~ a nice day of hiking and time in the pool. I also got to have some extra family time, which I always love! Lastly, I was very productive ~~ get plenty of housework done along with a few other things.
I hope everyone is doing well and having a great week.

I have to say I am so excited! I found vegan marshmallows and graham crackers. The other night was date night. My boyfriend and I made Smores. They were so yummy! I used a vegan peanut butter cup for the chocolate. It was like heaven in my mouth. emoticon

Hey everyone, I'm back! I was supposed to be gone until the 29th on maternity leave but my work sent me an email telling me my leave was miscalculated and I needed to return today instead. I am sad - it was really hard leaving baby at the daycare this morning. I have absolutely loved staying home with him and if it were possible I'd want to do it full-time, but it will probably be good for me to get talking with adults again, lol.

And not to mention exercising again. It's been so HOT that I haven't taken him out in the stroller so I gained 69lbs during my pregnancy, then another 9lbs after. I started slow in the gym this morning with the recumbent bike and my legs ached and I was dripping sweat, but I felt so good after. I hadn't even realized how much I missed working out. I am going to keep it slow this week, with machines and short miles, but I am going to try to up it a bit next week. I'm also going to sub for an injured coworker in yoga. Gotta get rid of this baby weight! Hopefully it comes off quickly. I am sure it's stuck on mostly due to my being so sedentary with baby and kitty snuggles the last 8 weeks.

My school leave ends on August 5th and I start my comprehensive exams. From what I've read it's 8 weeks to write 4 12-page papers on currently unknown subjects. It's going to be hard, but if I pass then I am in the dissertation phase - so close to being done with school! Then I'll be Doctor GoodFeline!

August 4th is our anniversary, or what I consider our true anniversary - it's when my husband and I began dating, and our original wedding date (before I moved it to be sooner because of MIL). We'll have been together 17 years this year. We can't really afford to do anything special, but maybe I can convince my hubby to grab a $5 Hot n Ready pizza from Little Caesar's and pull up a movie on Netflix.

"There is no right or wrong, tomorrow only comes for those with the power to overcome the challenge." - Asteroth, Catherine

I love camping but I've been doing it since I was a child. I do use an air mattress. While I use a tent, I cannot sleep on the ground. Too hard! Hoping to go for a couple days this coming week.

well! I completely looked over the toddler part!
btw- so glad I am not a grandma yet- might happen..might not- I do have 4 kids ages 27-22-but when and if good reason to be strong too-to keep up with grandkids!

I have a 3 person dome tent-not a special easy to put up one -they do sell those not sure what the difference is but I have no problem at all. Easy peasy. And you could be right - just like having life be simple- wake-eat breakfast- hike-if hike to lake -swim-hike lunch-NAP(which I never do at home)wake-hike-supper-read-sleep-repeat.

I could see living my life this way

This site does have a coin operated shower.

Anywyay- I want to look into backpack camping which I guess is a whole other thing. Hike or maybe bike.

Off to a party today- made a beet and white bean dip.

Happy Sunday!

The first paragraph:
Strong is the new skinny, people. In addition to reducing blood pressure, increasing the length of time you can hold your toddler at the grocery store and decreasing your risk of osteoporosis, strength training as you age also reduces your risk for death: In one study, people 65 and over were 46 percent less likely to die if they strength trained at least twice a week compared to those who did not.

Maybe the reason you like camping is the reason I don't. I'd have to learn how to do everything ... I know none of the basics for camping. You should have seen my son and I trying to put together a small tent in the backyard years ago!

Gail-
I did not notice it was targeted at the parents-of-toddlers age range- could not find that?

I prefer the tent to a hotel room- where I can see the bugs (vs. dust mites) and ew bed bugs..and know no one else but me slept there!

Camping is fun for me-I did not have any mosquitoes or bugs at night- quick scan and did fall in love with studying them again...watching some mate over the lake was very interesting!

Your hike- is a pretty place!
I will post pictures of mine soon.

Camping appeals to my just the basics - just the facts outlook on life

Camping always sounds like fun. emoticon

Except I prefer my vacations to have the everyday luxuries like a mattress, and a more-than-decent bathroom with a great shower without having to walk 5 minutes to get to it. Room service is nice too. And no crawly bugs or mosquitoes in my room all night. But otherwise camping sounds great!
emoticon
Thanks for sharing that informative article. Did you notice it was targeted at the parents-of-toddlers age range? I read a study showing people aged 30-40 years old are 92% less likely to die if they strength trained at least twice a week compared to people 80 and over.

We enjoyed walking yesterday afternoon in a park high up on a hill that was built around a pre-Revolutionary War fort overlooking Marblehead Harbor (north shore area of Massachusetts).

Sounds like you had a great 4th!

Gail- I SO have dishwasher envy!!

Camping does me me grateful for the everyday luxuries though- getting back to a mattress etc!
Hiked MAD Miles!- emoticon emoticon but did eat plenty of snacks! Hey I was hungry after the hikes! emoticon

so- good on cardio.. Top Story here on SP today is about ST and it says:
" In one study, people 65 and over were 46 percent less likely to die if they strength trained at least twice a week compared to those who did not."
Hey! Count me in!! I did not realize I could become immortal using weight/strength training!!
I can stop waiting for that vampire bite emoticon and dust off those weights instead!

Here is the article sparkpeople.com/resource/fitness_art
ic
les.asp?id=2151

Seriously though- I do have to dust off those weights!

Today- house cleaning and then a bike ride to beach- hoping thunderstorms do not happen..although if they do I will just enjoy those and a cold glass of chardonnay..

We go to a potluck party tomorrow (I am bringing a beet-white bean dip and veggies and chip+ kombucha + wine/beer)
and then Monday I am getting my ducks in a row- of course not to shoot at but to enjoy and to work on these pounds.
I NEED to get to goal weight..somewhere between 133-123 emoticon lies my pot of gold.. best health emoticon
I will know when I get there.

Vegan- yes but needs to be healthy too!

Happy weekend all! emoticon emoticon emoticon

Yes, I ran the dishwasher late last night. I put in a couple of huge fruit bowls that I keep on the counter and an assortment of other things to test it out. This new model holds lots more than the old one. This REALLY is new and improved. Unbelievably quiet. I ran it because the store gives only 48 hours to complain ... other than regular warranty. They will totally replace it if you complain about anything: a little scratch to operational problem. Nothing wrong with this one.

Our community said they were going to stop fireworks several years ago because of budget cuts. Someone made a private donation to keep the annual July 4 fireworks. I think he donates every year and a fundraising group has joined him. Our fireworks are always on July 3rd so we get to watch and then go to a different community for the 4th.

My dishwasher arrived yesterday afternoon. The plumber arrived early this morning. While he was here, he fixed little things that needed fixing but were not worth a call to the plumber. The new dishwasher makes the whole kitchen look like we remodeled. Seriously, I stood next to it and couldn't tell if it was on ... it's that quiet! But one problem: neither of us wants to put anything dirty in the beautiful dishwasher.

The lentil loaf fit just fine in that toaster oven. emoticon and again no turkeys harmed!!!

well- going away next week camping. Just me so I plan on bringing food I don't need to cook.
Plenty of info on campfire vegan food- but since it is just me makes more sense to go for salads and trail mix and fruits sort of stuff.

Note from a turkey! Add that to the list of benefits for being veg'n! I wouldn't want to try cook a whole traditional Thanksgiving meal in a toaster oven emoticon ! Or a 500' oven! emoticon

We do have a toaster oven - actually because of that - had to wait for a part for the oven. Thermostat thing. You could use the oven but it was trticky as it would go up to 500...anyhow that is fixed.

That's what the Home Depot sales guy said too. He was shocked! And I thought my reliable dishwasher should keep on ticking. I remember the good ol' days when appliances were built to last. emoticon

I always hand-wash pots & pans. Everything else goes through the dishwasher. And after days and days without a dishwasher, I remember why I'm convinced they are a basic necessity!

Although washing dishes by hand might not have been too bad if I didn't also have to soak water out from the dishwasher and wring my towels into the sink a few times a day. My fingers feel like prunes. That task is now over. The plumber disconnected it and moved the dishwasher onto the deck this afternoon. The brand new one is scheduled to arrive July 2. The plumber will return July 3. All a little to close to July 4 and an extra long weekend. Why do all our plumbing emergencies happen on a holiday??? There was a memorable Thanksgiving Day about 10 years ago ...

Yes- get the dishwasher!!
If not for podcasts I would be crazy...crazier by now because we rent and no dishwasher and landlord does not want one
-oddly enough his family has a few properties and we are looking to buy- turns out it one we looked at to buy has no dishwasher...not sure what is up with that!

I can't wait to have on again..it has been years emoticon

Time for a new dishwasher. Ours is about 21 years old and I was told it couldn't be a fixed a couple of years ago when it had a little problem. I kept it limping along and it kept on getting everything clean and shiny. Now it has a big problem. Water won't drain, it's not working. Have to act fast because I'm not enjoying the old-fashioned way of doing dishes!

Tracking food is hard for me to stick with too. Mostly because I don't like to measure food. I can guesstimate if I'm cooking. I've become decent at eyeballing amounts.

I don't even try to track nutrition if it's not a routine day. It's in the back of my mind if I'm on vacation, or cooking special favorite meals for family, or at a meeting.

I can only track if I have some mini objective. Any number range works for me because I find if one is on target than everything else is pretty close. Aiming for minimum of calorie range (or occasionally) aiming for minimum of protein range are my usual numbers to follow. I aim for more or less "within a range". Because I don't want to drive myself batty with something like going over by 5 calories or under 5 grams of protein! A range works best for me because calories and nutrients vary based on season, etc. It's not an exact science so I try my hardest to make myself believe I'm playing a game.

What do you do to help to get it done?

Gail, I know you are enjoying this special time with your son. My son who lives in FL will be coming this weekend. So excited to have him here for 5 weeks! He is a young teacher on summer break.

Christian Vegan, I hate tracking food and it is hard for me to be consistent with it. However, it does seem to help me make healthier choices when I list what and how much I eat. Guess I need some accountability for now anyway. Have a wonderful vacation/ family time!

I am horrible about tracking my food. I am trying to just make sure I am making healthier choice instead of focusing on the calories.
Thursday night we're leaving for a vacation. Two of my kids and I are headed to Kansas to visit family.

I am making a real effort this week to track my food and stay accountable for everything I put in my mouth. I am also tracking my water which is not so hard to get in since it has been hot and I've been doing lots of yard work the last few weeks. My downfalls tend to happen when I need to go into town and I want to treat myself. At home I do pretty well. Waving to all the team. emoticon

Any plans for the long weekend?

We are celebrating his graduate school graduation day with our son. It's a beautiful day in Maryland.

It was an 8 hour drive yesterday. Probably at least 10 hours to get back home because of the holiday. We are expecting lots of other cars on the road for company!

My OB predicts early labor for me, and an induction by the end of the month if I last that long. So baby, here we go! School is going well, I am doing this last class in an accelerated format to try to finish before baby comes so I have two assignments left. Then it's two months off from school and work to bond with baby. I am on total activity restriction at this point so I'm letting my husband wait on me while I be a couch potato.

It's cold an rainy here, just the way I like it. Good weather for sorting out the house and staying inside. Hope everyone else is doing well emoticon

I am in the final week of my class so I will be working on the final project. I've decided to skip the readings this week - they're long and don't sound too particularly relevant. I already know what I want to write about so I may as well get to it and try to spend as little of my weekend on the homework as possible. Next weekend is my baby shower, and the weekend after that is the School of Rock play and the 5K I am walking. In between is doctors and more doctors. I am sure I am forgetting something, but it's a busy month.

My employer offers exercise classes, and since I got pregnant I've been taking yoga and barre. The summer session for those classes starts April 29 and runs to June 28. I am due June 16. I've been debating whether to sign up for the summer session, wondering if I'll be too pregnant to want to participate, and knowing I will need a sub for the end of the session right off the bat.

It's been nice weather here lately, but today is WINDY. Cold temperature, wind, and we're expecting rain in some areas while others are expecting snow. I've got my fleece lined leggings on to try to stay warm - it's not just cold outside, but the office tends to be chilly, too.

I have a friend and we've been friends since we were in 8th grade. Her birthday is the same day as your birthday. My birthday is earlier in the month, March 4.

And it's good that my birthday is only once a year because I've been off my routine since my birthday. Celebrations! Holidays! My kiddo was home for spring break. Lots of restaurant visits this month. It's been nice to celebrate but ... the routine definitely went out the window. I'm not worrying about it. Birthdays are a time when it's okay to enjoy treats.

And you've inspired me to get rid of the Oreo stuffed chocolate chip cookies that were a part of spring break. Instead, I'm baking a batch of oatmeal banana raisin cookies.

I had a birthday on Friday and I have been totally off my diet and exercise routine for the past few days.

I bought fig butter at Trader Joes and I have been having peanut butter and fig butter sandwiches every day. On Friday I had a pecan roll for breakfast and a high quality veggie pizza for dinner. I had leftover pizza yesterday.

Dr. Oz did a piece on high quality pizzas and they said to reheat the pizza, heat it in a skillet with a lid. I tried it and the crust was nice and crispy. Much better than the microwave.

We went to the Pacific Symphony yesterday. They did a tribute the Andre Previn who died in late February and they did Mendelssohn’s Italian Symphony.

I threw out the fig butter and I am back on my diet.

I did an hour on my elliptical and no strength training yesterday. Today I did 2 ½ hours on my elliptical, ½ hour of walking and ½ hour of upper body strength training.

I think I gained 2 pounds, which isn’t a disaster.

I hope everyone is having a good weekend.
