Old Dog - New Tricks

I have been running several times a week for 18 years. While in some ways that is an accomplishment, in other ways it is kind of depressing. All my years of running, including five marathons, twenty plus half marathons, and many 5K and 10K races, I am not any thinner or faster. My goals were not crazy - loose 30 lbs and consistently run 10 minute miles. I suspect that my lack of weight loss has a lot to do with my eating habits. Running makes me think I can eat like a teenager. Also, I suspect that the distance running increases my cortisol levels. My plan for the coming months is to run shorter distances, slower, to cut down my cortisol, and count those dang calories. Not excited. I wish I could just get there by exercise alone, but it’s just not happening. Carrying too much weight is really hard on my joints. I have to do something different if I want to stay healthy.

    When I hit plateaus in my weight loss, and I have had many, I find I need to change up my routines, diet and exercise. Our bodies adjust to what we do all the time, and it stops being challenging. So try changing your diet and try some different exercises and see if that doesn't help. emoticon emoticon

    I bike a lot. It has no effect on my weight but my legs look stronger. You will find that the exercise trims rather than makes changes on the scale. Try eating better and then measure yourself instead of weighing yourself. Good luck.

    Have much similar experience, except longer distances, slower pace, and older body. My trainer told me it's 85% nutrition and it's so true. Not only do you feel better, your body works better, and you recover faster. My problems arise from poor planning and "entitlement eating" . Wish you luck on your journey
