Job Hunt - Good News

Some good news, Spark Buddies !

I've accepted a three month contract position. The pay is good. It's better paying than my previous job. It's one town over, so I can get there by bus. The hours are good, so I can keep my part time job as a personal trainer. The company is listed as one of the best companies for work for in Mass. But, it's a contract. That means no benefits, except for accruing sick time and maybe healthcare after a probation period.

I'll be working an IT project. In fact, I'll be the lead technician managing the technicians as well as working with the project manager as a coordinator. Working a project isn't bad. The last time I was laid off, I got back into the workforce with a project job. For those of you who've never worked a project, they are notorious for going over. That's the nature of the beast. So, I'm pretty sure that three month contract will be extended. Which is one reason I decided to take the contract.

At first, I was wary because it was for three months. But, I started to rethink the job because the permanent job I hoped I would get has still not decided on the position. That's what's been so frustrating. I interviewed for a great position with a local college over four weeks ago and no decision has been made. My recruiter told me I'm still in contention, but so are 3-4 other candidates and they are still conducting more interviews. So, there is no guarantee I will get that job and I don't want to let a good job pass just to wait for a job I might not get anyway.

Could I take this job and then quit if I were offered the permanent job ? Some friends suggested that was something I could do. But, others have said that they think the three month contract is a better opportunity with less job stress. My recruiter told me that many of the techs who work projects are hired on perm if they do a good job and are well liked by the company. That's what happened to me last time. I started as a contract worker and they liked me so much, they hired me perm. That's what I'm hoping will happen this time and that's another reason I decided to take the job. I do think it's a step in the right direction.

I am relieved to have found something within a couple of months of being laid off. I'll be honest, I was terrified of the prospect of having to wait 9+ months before finding another job. That's how long it took me to find work the first time I'd been laid off. I worry that the older I get, the harder it gets to find work. period. And yes, I could be let go at the end of the project, but I'm not going to worry about that. I'm just going to do the best job I can so that they will decide to keep me on at the end of the project.

So, thank you to all my many spark buddies who've offered their kind comments and support while I've been looking. I'm starting back in the working world next Tuesday, filling out paperwork on Monday.

I wrote a cousin of mine to say that I picked up some fruit for work. I said that had such a nice ring to it,"bringing fruit to work for snacks".

I wish you good luck. It is such a cutthroat world. You need something better than luck bravely facing the vagaries of life. Praise God for when the $5 is found in life.

Better to be cared for by the One who feeds the sparrows. May mercies attend your way.

Congrats!! I'm glad you have your foot in the door for a reputable company. I am here in MA as well, working in Cambridge. The commute in and out of Cambridge isnt all that fun, but the location is wonderful for job opportunities. Have you looked closer to the city? Thats also awesome you can get to work by bus, that will save a lot of money on gas!!
Congrats and good luck with your new position!!!

My niece was working for a Temping Agency. She got a Temp. position with a firm. It was all they needed - someone temporarily! She liked the job - they liked her - she got a permanent job and was there for a long time until she had her last child.

Hopefully this position will transition into a permanent one for you !

I think it's awesome! It's good money, a good thing on your resume, and you get to "try them out", too! I know many companies hire this way as they get to see what they would be getting and see if it's a good fit! I don't think I would quit the temp job, even if the other job comes through, as it says a lot about you to stay and utilize what is in front of you! Who knows what all could happen before the other job really is offered! I will be thinking of you next week...especially on Tuesday! Go and show them what ya got!
    Congratulations & Happy Hugs,
